Description: Gymnocalycium multiflorumSN|11443]]SN|11445]] v. parisiense is a local or morphological form of the variable Gymnocalycium monvilleiSN|11445]]SN|11438]]. It is rarely found in cultivation and distinguisesh from standard Gymnocalycium monvilleiSN|11445]]SN|11438]] for the very attractive dark bluish body, whitish or pale yellowish spines and large white blooms (not pink). It obtained its name “multiflorum” (Many flowered) for its showy displays of white flowers, however this species rarely lives up to the promise of its name in cultivation, and blooms with moderation only when mature.
Similar forms: Gymnocalycium multiflorumSN|11445]]SN|11445]] v. parisiense and Gymnocalycium multiflorumSN|11438]]SN|11445]] v. albispinum are both white-spined variants Gymnocalycium multiflorumSN|11438]]SN|11445]]. Gymnocalycium ourselianumSN|11445]]SN|11443]] is probably another variant and was regarded by Backeberg as synonymous with G. multiflorum.
Habit: Simple or eventually forming large clumps.
Stem: Globular or somewhat depressed or sometimes short columnar, 9 cm high or more, sometimes 12 cm in diameter. The epidermis is bluish-green.
Ribs: 10 to 15, broad at base, somewhat tubercled, especially above, acute.
Areoles: Elliptic, 10 mm Long.
Spines: 7 to 10, all radial, spreading, somewhat flattened, stout, yellowish or whitish with a reddish tinge at the base, the longest one 3 cm long.
Flower buds: Ovoid, covered with imbricate scales.
Flowers: Are some of the largest in this genus, often growing larger than the plant, funnel-shaped 3,5 to 8 cm long and wide candid white(or white faintly flushed with pink) and often double petaled, short campanulate. Inner perianth segments oblong, up to 3 cm long, obtuse or acute. Scales on the ovary broad and rounded, their margins scarious.
Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Gymnocalycium monvillei group
Gymnocalycium monvillei (Lem.) Britton & Rose: Strongly spined species with 7-13 long, curving, stiff yellow translucent radial spines with a red base on a bright green background. (Origin Córdoba province)
Gymnocalycium monvillei subs. achirasense (H.Till & Schatzl) H.Till: Has 10-12 radial spines almost flat against the plant body (Origin San Luis province)
- Gymnocalycium monvillei subs. brachyanthum (Gürke) H.Till: Has approx. 7 spines (Origin San Luis province)
Gymnocalycium monvillei subs. horridispinum (G.Frank ex H.Till) H.Till: Has 10-12 strong stiff radial spines.
Gymnocalycium monvillei var. orientale Neuhuber
Gymnocalycium monvillei var. steineri H.Till: broom shaped protruding or long intertwined golden-yellow spination. Distribution: Sierra Grande, Cordoba, Argentina.
Gymnocalycium monvillei f. villamercedense H.Till & Neuhuber: (ssp. monvillei) has globular solitary stems with very developed chin-shaped protuberances without a swollen taproot. Fruits red. Distribution: San Luis, Argentina.
Gymnocalycium multiflorum (Hook.) Britton & Rose: (same as ssp. monvillei?) Spines 7 to 10, all radial, spreading, somewhat flattened, yellow; flowers pinkish to nearly white. (Origin Córdoba province)
