Subspecies, varieties, forms and cultivars of plants belonging to the Echinocereus triglochidiatus group

• Echinocereus gonacanthus (Engelm. & J.M.Bigelow) Rümpler: A name carelessly applied to miscellaneous plants throughout the range of var. triglochidiatus.
• Echinocereus neomexicanus Standl.: Grows in Oak, Pinyon-Juniper woodland.
• Echinocereus triglochidiatus Engelm.: Plants with the fewest and largest spines, that occupy the eastern portion of the species’ distribution. The central or radial spines are sharply angular in cross section, and 1-2 mm thick.
• Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. inermis (K.Schum.) G.D.Rowley: This is a spineless form (without or with very short spines) in the wild plants with 1 to 7 spines and the spineless form are equally common. (intermediate forms occurs too)
• Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. inermis f. cristata hort.: spineless + crested form.
• Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. melanacanthus (Engelm. ex A.Gray) L.D.Benson: Rocky Mountain montane forest, pinyon-juniper woodland.
• Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. mojavensis (Engelm. & J.M.Bigelow) L.D.Benson: This taxon, that occupies the western portion of the range of the species, includes curly-spined plants (mainly in California) and straight-spined plants (including most populations in Arizona, Utah, and western Colorado). Spines mostly white.
